Magical Treasure Walnuts – A DIY that will amaze your little ones!

The craft I am about to share with you is absolutely brilliant, if I do say so myself. I am incredibly grateful to my wonderful friend June of Goddess Jewels for testing the idea and then sharing what she found out, and she graciously agreed to me sharing the tutorial here with you.
These little walnuts are going to amaze your little ones, they are truly magical.
On the outside they are an ordinary perfectly normal walnut, but when you crack them open you will find wonderful little fairy treasures, surprises and other lovely things!

Magical Treasure Walnuts

You will need:

Walnuts
A dull knife
Glitter glue
Super glue
Gold Paint (optional!)
Little gems, earrings, any other little presents or stocking fillers that are small enough to fit inside a walnut.

How to:
Begin by tapping all around the seam of your walnut with the handle of your knife. Then insert the knife between the seams of the flat end of your walnut. It should now simply twist apart, leaving the two halves intact.

Remove the walnut from the shell and brush the inside of the shell with glitter glue. Let it dry completely.

P1070360

Put your treasure into one half of the walnut.

P1070366

Carefully squeeze superglue around the seam of the walnut and press the two halves together. Your walnut should look just like any other ordinary walnut now!

P1070365

If you like you can paint the outside with glitterglue or golden paint.

P1070372

Let the nuts dry and watch your loved ones open them to find a hidden surprise!

P1070376

Make lots and give them to absolutely everyone you know, I promise they will love them!
(Please don’t leave any young children unattended with them, anything that fits inside a walnut is definitely a choking hazard.)

Have fun!

    They look really fab, Miri!

  2. I agree – they are amazing!

Unfortunately my girls spotted me popping walnuts open, so I won’t be able to do this for them ;D But it’s a great gift idea. If you get large walnuts there’s a surprising amount of space inside them.

Great, except you need 24 very small treasures for an advent calendar. Any ideas?

I put the walnuts in a hot oven for a few minutes before I open them. It makes it easier. They open like mussels then, some of them. Just be careful not to forget them!!! (I’ve done that too!!!)

Good tip about putting them in the oven, thanks. I don’t think I could come up with 24 treasures that tiny though, which is why ours will go in to stockings. It’s traditional to have nuts in stockings, so this is a nice twist on it. But hmm, ideas…gemstones, beads, money, jewellery, craft stuff (like sequins. pompoms etc), pretty paperclips, a tiny paper doll chain, possibly a small bath pearl, written jokes, a wrapped sweet. All of which will depend on the age of the child receiving it, of course :)

For Advent, if you didn’t put glitter on the inside of the walnut, what about jelly beans, smarties, plastic rings, small chocolate, licorice allsort (all relatively small … comparable to the chocolate advent calendars in stores). Jewel the outside with glitter glue or paint. (I think the walnuts are a GREAT idea … if only I had small children still)

      • June says:

Yes, that would work. You’d have to be very careful with the glue though. Or wrap the treats inside something like tinfoil before putting them in the walnut.
