We are always looking for ways to make our home a place of calmness and peacefulness. What works well for us is using the Calm Down Basket . Emily’s favourite is the Rice Box, she loves to find little glass gems and move the rice around with the bamboo stick.
A slightly more grown-up version of that Rice Box is a Tabletop Zen Garden.
You can buy these online, but it’s easy to make your own, too.
You will need:
Playsand or sand from the beach. (Thank you, Grandpa!)
An old paintbrush, as small as possible;
Some smooth pebbles and other decorations;
Scissors
A small dish or box to hold all your sand.
How to:
Pour your sand into the dish and shake the dish gently to make sure your sand looks smooth.
Add your stones and decorations. You can use pretty much anything. We used a candle and a few small pebbles, but you can use glass gems and even small plastic animals. Remember that this is for children and it should be appealing to them. We then cut the bristles off our paintbrush and used it to draw patterns in the sand.
That’s really all you need to do to add a little bit of calm to your home.
We keep our Zen Garden in our Peace Corner available to the little ones whenever they feel like it.
Remember that the Zen Garden is never really finished, and it’s really not about getting it to look perfect.
When your little one is done playing with the Zen Garden they can reset it by smoothing out the sand with the back of a small spoon.
Have a beautiful day!

What a great idea! Funny, I just wrote about my own calm down basket (which was inspired by you!). But, I love love love this zen garden!!!
Such a lovely coincidence… We’re learning Japanese at the moment with the aid of a wonderful Japanese friend. And through all of the study we are enjoying learning the culture of the Country too so a Zen Garden was something we thought we’d also have a go at. We popped out last week to the local garden centre and bought a bag of sand and gravel (off the the beach for the pebbles) and the girlies are making one in the garden. We even bought a ‘rescue’ plant from the 50% off section at the centre so we’re hoping to save the poor thing within our Zen Garden. We’re all for halping make a little peace in our busy lives. It’s wonderful to have one like yours for indoors too… for when the weather is pants!
