We recently received “TopThat Publishing : First Words Sticker Activity Book” in the post.
It’s a fun sticker book. I don’t think our little ones have ever had a sticker activity book before so they were really happy to see this. We were all eager and excited to try it, and let me tell you, it’s FUN!
It did not take long for them to understand how it worked, and Emi (5) was able to read all the words and “instructions” on her own.
Emi loved putting the stickers in the right places and was very proud to read and spell out each word,
but younger children and non-readers can easily complete the pages, too, as there are pictures of each sticker right where they belong.
Our favourite page was the “getting dressed” page, Emi loved putting clothes on the little boy and the little girl.
I have asked Emily and she says she would really recommend this book because it is a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon indoors, and I agree. (Or take it with you to a picnic or the beach, whenever your little one needs a little bit of quiet time! The stickers are on a sheet inside the book so you won’t loose them!
It’s great to help a new reader build confidence or promote word recognition for younger children.
For us, this sticker book was a first, but it definitely won’t be the last. Well done, lovely people at TopThat!Publishing.

That’s so interesting to me, alongside the Steiner educational philosophy. We are trying really hard to protect our 4 year old from accelerating into academic stuff, although she is bright and in certain moods wants to read and write. As an early reader/writer myself, and for a couple other reasons, I want to allow her as much playing and slowly emerging time as I can. I am grateful to have a proper kindergarten plan for her for the next couple of years, so I can use that to hold myself back. But I wondered how that has worked out for you guys – I am guessing you just followed Emily’s lead, but how did that feel for you as the mama/teacher into Steiner ed? I keep thinking it is right that I gently guide her away from the “deep water” academically/intellectually, just as I would from the deep end of the swimming pool, but it is a hard choice to make with family pressure.
Now I have written my book (!) I look forward to hearing more about how your educational plans unroll. Did you use a curriculum? We have – largely for simplicity and stress free for me.
Lucy, to me it was a difficult step to review this book and I nearly sent it back. It’s not how we usually choose to spend time around here. Emily figured out how to read when she was just 3 years old, and we have hundreds (literally) of books readily available for her to pick up and read. Now, the sticker book was sitting on top of my -to do- pile and Emily found it and asked about it. She said that she would like to try it and I felt that maybe it was the right time for it. She had fun doing it, especially putting the clothes stickers on the children. The reading, for her, was not a major part of the activity as she already knows how to do it.
) to felt boards.
I don’t like directing her away from any activity, (especially because in this case it was my -fault- for leaving the book accessible ) but she did walk away when she had her -fill- of this activity.
She had so much fun doing it, however, that it left me wondering whether we should find more of those books in the future. For now , however, we’re sticking (
