Remembrance Day Poppy Craft

This is a really quick & easy craft just in time for Remembrance Day,
we made it today before we observed our 2 minutes silence, but we will probably make a whole bunch before Remembrance Sunday.

You will need:

- a soft paintbrush
- a coffee filter
- a green pipe-cleaner
- a black button
- red water-colour

How to:

First, push your pipe-cleaner through the bottom of your coffee filter.

Attach your black button on the other side.

Paint your poppy red now, use lots of water so you don’t break the filter.

Now you just need to hang your poppy up to dry.
That’s it, you have made a beautiful poppy to honour those who gave their life for all of us!
While you wait for your poppy to dry, share some stories about who we remember on this special day!

We have shared this one today and talked much about it.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Wake up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I have been very much surprised by Emily ‘s wish to talk about what happened, by her honest & innocent questions (“But why did they not just talk about it?”), and by how much she really understood.
I really think that this is something we need to share with our children, no matter how young they are, as long as we do it an an honest and responsible way.

Wishing you a lovely day,

  1. Lucy says:

That’s a lovely idea. The whole silence thing went straight over our heads today I am ashamed to say.

  2. What an important holiday for kids to understand. I tried to teach my kids (2 and 4) about it. They are just stuck on “people died.” Cute flowers
